The 365 Day Challenge

My goal is to create something every day using something from my craft cupboard. I am a self-confessed fabric addict and just love to fossick through thrift shops and find treasures.

So here goes. Live, love, recycle and get crafting.

Day 30 - Reusable lunchbags from scraps and waste.

Today I've made some reusable lunch bags.

A couple of Christmases ago we bought an inflatable Santa with a palm tree, a bit random but the kids loved it and it stood on our front veranda. Last Christmas we got it out and it went up once and then the motor burnt out or something and it didn't work anymore. It was useless and destined for landfill so I decided to cut some of the plastic up in case it came in handy for a future project. Now the time has come.

The other fabric I have used here was a library bag I was trying to make at midnight one night hence sewing wrong to right and right to wrong and then giving up. Never sew when exhausted!

I find the rush to get everyone going in the morning a real downer so I make lots of sandwiches ahead of time and freeze them ready to go in the mornings. These reusable sandwich and snack bags are great for this and the kids can grab their own out of the freezer in the morning. I make them with a plastic lining and a velcro closure. They just go in the wash when needed, or with the plastic lining you can give them a wipe or just shake out the crumbs.

Craft cupboard materials

- scrap - reclaimed thin plastic
- scrap - failed library bag project
- sew in velcro

Here are the original fabrics - reclaimed santas's palm tree and library bag

Cut the rectangles to your desired size, fold in half, sew up the sides and then put the lining inside with the wrong sides facing one another. Fold the tops over and topstictch to neaten and sew the velcro on. Now you have environmentally friendly and reusable lunch or snack bags.

I think these could be used for treasure too. :)
